UFRSD unveils full-day preschool program

UPPER FREEHOLD — A new full-day preschool program introduced in the Upper Freehold Regional School District (UFRSD) looks to meet the needs of parents who have requested it while readying youngsters for the school system. Dubbed “Stepping Stones,” the program is slated to kick off in September 2012 with one section of 12 students.
“This is a very exciting opportunity,” Judy Chevalier, director of special services at the school, said, adding that parents with children in the district’s half-day programs had expressed a wish for one that spanned a full day.
According to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, who spoke about Stepping Stones at the Feb. 1 Board of Education meeting, the program is capped at 12 students because of regulations that require 7 square feet of space for each child. He added, however, that the low student-toteacher ratio helps to facilitate better, more individualized teaching. In addition, teachers are complemented by one or two teaching assistants.
“Because of the fact that there are only 12 spots, we could have some competition for these slots,” Fitzpatrick said.
The program uses the state-approved Creative Curriculum, which focuses on language and social skills development, according to Chevalier. District literature on the program states that it fosters a positive self-image and treats each child as an individual, honoring his/her stage in development and working with it. Areas of study include reading and math readiness, science, art and music, problem-solving, language, and health and safety, among others.
“Classroom routines encourage active involvement, experimentation and reinforcement,” the brochure reads. “The activities within the classroom incorporate children’s individual differences and maturation levels, learning styles, needs, interests and prior experiences. Motor, language, perceptual, social and self-help skills are introduced.”
Occupational, physical and speech therapy are also available for children who need it.
“We’re a district that believes in inclusion,” Chevalier said. “We really try to promote environments where everyone is included and accepted on their terms.”
Fitzgerald echoed her sentiments at the meeting.
“It’s always better if we can instruct our students in an integrated setting,” he said.
Running from 8:40 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. Monday through Friday, the program is open to all children ages 3 ½ to 5 who reside in Upper Freehold and Allentown. Tuition is $720 per month, or $7,200 for the year. Fitzgerald said the district compared its costs for placements in such programs outside the district, and the tuition for Stepping Stones represents a savings. Reduced tuition is available for families in need, with proof of hardship.
Transportation is free to children who live within the district. Snacks are provided, and students have the opportunity to purchase school lunches.
Half-day programs are still available, with an early session running 8:40-11:10 a.m., and a later one 12:55-3:25 p.m.
