Millstone Cyclones to play for State Cup title Saturday
The Millstone United Cyclones U13 girls travel soccer team will be playing for the State Cup championship on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Wall Sports Complex in Wall Township.
The Cyclones, who are ranked 30th in the state on gotsoccer.com out of 115 teams, will be matched up against the 13th ranked Beachwood Dragonflies in the State Cup final that will start at 1 p.m.
Luck of the draw had the Cyclones with a bye the first week of State Cup competition on Sept. 18. There were 45 teams in their division.
Millstone traveled south to play East Greenwich Clover United for their first playoff game on Sept. 28, beating them 3-1, with Taylor Mastropasqua scoring two goals andAlyssa Sloane scoring one; Erica Martins andAbby Debebe had the assists.
On Oct. 15, Millstone traveled to play Ocean Township United Wildcats and came away with the win, 2-1. Taylor Mastropasqua scored both goals with Jess Archer assisting.
Heading into the quarterfinal, the Cyclones got to play on their home pitch Oct. 23, facing off with a Ramsey team called Hotspur Borrow. Jess Archer scored a key goal off an assist from Sydney Regina with six minutes remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Hotspur Borrow came back quickly and scored with only two minutes, leaving the score at 1-1 when the whistle blew.
The game remained scoreless through two overtimes, and it was on to to the penalty kick shootout. After five shooters had taken their turns, the teams were still tied. The teams had to now go to golden goal penalty kicks. Goalie Ali DeSalvatore rose to the occasion and gave it her all, stopping both goals, as did their goalie. It was defender Katie DiFrancesco’s perfectly placed kick for the Cyclones that was the golden goal, moving the Cyclones on to the Cup semifinals on Nov. 6.
The Cyclones traveled to Chatham to play Chatham United Cougars. The Cyclones fell behind early, 1-0 in the first half, when the Cougars connected on a penalty kick. Goalie Ali DeSalvatore made a spectacular dive for the ball, almost making the save, but the Cougar player just chipped it in off the rebound.
All the girls came out hard in the second half, with Sydney Regina scoring a header goal off a corner kick from Katie Mauro to tie the game at 1-1. It was Jess Archer who hit her mark by scoring right over the Chatham goalie’s head from a beautiful assist from Taylor Mastropasqua to take the lead, 2-1. Alyssa Sloane scored the insurance third goal for the final 3-1 triumph and a trip to the Cup final.
The Cyclone team members are Millstone’s Alyssa Caba, Sydney Cummings, Ali and Nikki DeSalvatore, Katie DiFrancesco, Alexa Guadagno, Sydney Regina and Alyssa Sloane; East Windsor’s JessArcher, Abby Debebe, Megan Henderson, Taylor Mastropasqua and Erica Martins; Allentown’s Carly Roche; Freehold’s Katie Mauro; and Manalapan’s Ashlyn Hovan. The coaches are Rocco Regina, Jeff Sloane and Beth Roche. The team manager is Jenn Archer, and the team is professionally trained by Rodrigo Castro.
