      Vote for governor gets final approval

      The New Jersey Board of State Canvassers met on Dec. 1 and certified the ballots cast in the Nov. 3 gubernatorial election, as required by law.

      Republican Chris Christie was certified as the winner of the gubernatorial election in New Jersey with 1,174,445 votes, to Democrat Jon S. Corzine's 1,087,731 votes.

      The members to the board were state Sen. Ronald L. Rice, state Sen. Steven Oroho, state Assemblyman Upendra J. Chivukula, state Assemblyman Jon Bramnick, while Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells and Division of Elections Director Robert Giles served as the chair and clerk, respectively.

      "Today the Board of State Canvassers has certified the final results from the general election. I am pleased to report that 2,451,704 registered voters cast ballots on Nov. 3, including the 144,856 vote-by-mail ballots received by the county boards of election," Wells said.

      "I want to recognize the county officials for their extraordinary work in once again ensuring a fair, accessible and smooth process for the people of New Jersey," she added.

      The turnout represents 47 percent of 5,223,047 registered voters in New Jersey.
