Mary Ellen McCarthy is Allentown High School's first coach to be inducted into the New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

McCarthy has been the head field hockey coach at the high school for 14 years. During that time she has led the team to win one state group championship, four state sectional championships, ten division titles, three county championships and two conference titles.

She has also earned the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) Coach of the Year award, the NFHS State Coach of the Year award, the NFHS Sectional Coach of the Year award and four other coach of the year awards.

McCarthy is very proud of all of her and her team's accomplishments, but said she is most proud of the 11 Division 1 players she had the opportunity to coach and to see three of those players go on to coach at the college level.

Athletic Director Brian Irwin said Mc- Carthy has built and maintained a field hockey program that exemplifies pride, excellence and tradition.

The Allentown Redbirds and the Robbinsville Ravens joined forces on April 30 in a fundraising lacrosse match to benefit Chris Heinel who was severely injured in a 1997 lacrosse game. Chris is a graduate of the Hun School of Princeton and is currently enrolled at Rider University. The Chris Heinel Fund was established by his family and friends to help with the costs of Chris' continued care and treatment. All proceeds from the event, in the amount of $385, will benefit the fund.

The Manalapan Bulldogs, a boys MAPS travel team, seeks several dedicated players for its roster for the fall. Players born after Aug. 1, 1996, are eligible. Tryouts will be held 6 p.m. May 8 at the Manalapan Recreation Center, field D, Route 522 and Taylor Mills Road, Manalapan. If necessary, rain dates will be held 6:30 p.m. May 12 and 6 p.m. May 15.
