Sustainable open space funds needed
      It may seem a bit insensitive to be talking about saving land when our economy is in such dire straits, but the issue is very important in both good times and in bad. Well-funded open space programs are not as dramatic as stimulus programs, but they are a wise investment in our economy and in our personal well-being.

There is no legitimate reason for Sunday hunting
      Imust agree with the comments made recently by Bob and Betty Bailey concerning the attempts by hunters to have archery hunting go to seven days a week and also to have the safety zones for archers reduced. The same arguments made by the hunters that the Baileys counter so effectively, on both issues, are virtually the same used by hunters here in Pennsylvania.

UFRSD drug testing policy is coercive
      Recently an article covering the Upper Freehold Township drug testing policy described students as having "volunteered." I take exception to the characterization of this policy as being voluntary. It is not voluntary — it is coercive. The school board threatens students into compliance by withholding access to extracurricular activities.

Sunday wildlife watchers shouldn't have to fear projectiles
      Hunters say, "There has never been an incident in New Jersey in which a bow and arrow hunter has mistaken a person, horseback rider or family pet for a deer." Just a few weeks ago in West Amwell Township a 3-year-old cat had to fight for its life after a hunter apparently put her in his sights, drew back his bow and shot a barbed arrow through her head.

U.F. officials deserve praise for being proactive
      Many thanks to our mayor and Township Committee for realizing the challenging economic times that local taxpayers are facing. Hopefully, by choosing to reduce our 2009 township budget, we will realize a reduction in our local property taxes.
