The Allentown Upper Freehold (AUF) Lady Hawks fifth-grade girls travel basketball team captured the 2008-09 Central Jersey Youth Winter League Girls Fifth Grade Championship on March 8 by beating Pennsbury 23-21, and completing an11- 1 campaign.
The Lady Hawks led the contest from the opening tap and never relinquished control of the lead throughout the game.
In only its second year in existence, the Lady Hawks team finished the regular season at 8-1, before going on a three-game playoff run tear beating Ewing 33-18, Robbinsville 23-16, and then Pennsbury 23-21 for the league crown.
The 2008-09 championship AUF Lady Hawks are: Danielle A., Alexa C., Lachelle C., Erica K., Hope N., Stephanie O., Emily O., Grace S. and Samantha W. The team is coached by Mike Narozniak and Paul Anthony.
The Upper Freehold Regional Men's Softball league will hold registration for the 2009 softball season. The league is for men, ages 30 and over.
The season will begin in early June with play on Saturdays and some weeknights. Playoffs will be held during the early fall season. Fields are located in the Upper Freehold/ Allentown area.
The registration deadline is April 24. To obtain an application, email ufrmsl.2003@yahoo.com. The application and the $95 player fee should be sent to UFRMSL, 21 Hankins Farm Road, Allentown, NJ 08501. The player fee does not include the Upper Freehold Township Committee's facility usage fee, which should be included along with the registration fee. The fee is $10 for Upper Freehold residents and $15 for all others as noted on the registration form.
A draft will be held immediately following the registration deadline to place new players on existing teams or to assist in forming new teams. Team rosters will consist of a minimum of 16 players.
The Marlboro Renegades, a 13U travel baseball team, is seeking pitchers from the central Jersey area. A few slots are still available for committed players born after April 30, 1995. Tryouts will be held March 14 at 3 p.m. The team will have indoor winter training workouts, then compete in a spring travel league, including tournaments.
