      Local officials say reduction would defy voter mandate

      The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders may reduce the county open space tax by $7.8 million to save money. The county instituted a dedicated open space tax in 2002 to raise $16 million each year for the purchase and preservation of undeveloped land.
