Movie shouldn't influence decision to buy Chihuahua
After seeing Disney's new movie, kids everywhere are begging for Chihuahuas of their own. But unlike Papi and Chloe, many Chihuahuas who are purchased on a whim won't have happy endings.
When parents find out that caring for these intelligent, strong-willed, and energetic dogs is more work than they expected or when they don't act exactly like the dogs in the movie, many of these animals will be abandoned at animal shelters, handed over to strangers, or dumped on the streets to "fend for themselves." They may be small, but like all dogs, Chihuahuas need daily training and walks, expensive veterinary care, and all the love and attention you can give them.
If you are ready for this, please adopt a homeless dog from an animal shelter — never buy dogs from pet stores or breeders, which bring more dogs into a world that is already short of good homes. And remember, best friends come in many colors, shapes, and sizes — the perfect dog for you might just be a lovable shelter mutt. Even Rusco — the dog who plays Papi in the movie — was rescued from a shelter! To learn more, visit www.HelpingAnimals.com.
