Trailing 3-0 in the second half, Monmouth University senior Joanna De- Moor netted two scores, to pull the Hawks within a lone goal, but eventually fell 3-2 at Central Connecticut State, in Northeast Conference women's soccer action. Monmouth, which was on a nine-game unbeaten streak, falls to 10- 2-1 on the season, and 3-1 in league play.
The Blue Devils got on the board first on Rachel Caneen's fourth goal in the last two games, as she beat Monmouth keeper Lia Fierro from just inside the box to the top right of the goal to give CCSU the early edge at 17:39.
The lead reached 2-0 when Karise Hilt scored at 24:30 in the first half. Hilt took a give-and-go from Leah Blayney and beat Fierro to the lower left corner for the two goal advantage.
The Hawks scored their first goal of the game to cut the Blue Devil lead to 3- 1 at 64:53 in the second half. DeMoor's eighth goal of the season off a pass from junior Andrea Lopez cut the Blue Devil lead to two. DeMoor scored again to cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:02 left in the game, as junior BrieAnne Nomejko was credited with an assist on the tally.
DeMoor now leads the team with a career-best nine goals, and 20 points, while Lopez notched her team-high fifth assist on the year.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks host Saint Francis at 3 p.m., on The Great Lawn, where the Blue and White are 6-0 so far this season.
The Monmouth University men's soccer team fell behind Robert Morris 2-0 early in the second half, but scored a pair of goals within a five-minute span late in the second half and held on in two overtimes to earn a draw with the Colonials on Sunday afternoon on The Great Lawn. The Hawks move to 7-2-2 and 1-0-1 in the Northeast Conference.
The Colonials scored the game's first tally when Tyler Stanley crossed the ball to Kyle McIvor for a goal in the 36th minute, and they increased their advantage when Stanley assisted on Sean Riley's header in the 53rd minute to make the score 2-0 in favor of RMU.
Monmouth then mounted their comeback, which began when Andreas Klang played the ball forward to freshman RJ Allen who beat the keeper to the far post for his first collegiate goal in the 72nd minute to cut the deficit in half.
Then, less than five minutes later, Allen found Ryan Kinne with his free kick and the sophomore, who hit the game-winner in MU's 2-1 double overtime win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday, headed the ball in for the equalizer. The two teams then played a pair of scoreless overtime periods for the draw.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday when they visit Mount St. Mary's for a 1 p.m. match.
