      U.S. should treat vets with deserved respect
            My nephew, U.S. Army Sgt. Coleman Bean, died earlier this month. He was 25, and he took his own life. I've spent this week in New Jersey, where Coleman lived, helping his parents and brothers get through this terrible time. Over 300 people attended Coleman's memorial service in Milltown. Many of them were young men that Coleman had served with in the military.

      Early prostate cancer screening could save a man's life
            In September 2004, on the eve of surgery to remove my cancerous prostate, I wrote to this newspaper to urge men to become informed of their risks. Since September is "Prostate Cancer Awareness" month, I write again to relate my developments and to repeat my message.

      GOP should not mock role of community groups
            Speakers at the Republican National Convention mocked the role of community organizers. Does the Republican Party understand the value of such groups? Community groups run food banks and volunteer time in health care clinics across the country.

      New Jersey should not lower its drinking age
            Recently, the issue of lowering the drinking age has received significant media attention. A group called Choose Responsibility has enlisted over 100 university and college presidents to sign on in support of a debate on the merits of the 21-year-old drinking age.

      Upper Freehold deserves commending for downzoning
            Amajority of the Upper Freehold Township Committee deserves a big thank you for increasing building lot sizes from the current 3 and 5 acres to the new 6 and 10 acres. Their passage of this important zoning change and several other master plan ordinances on Sept. 4 represents the culmination of months of hard work by the Township Committee.
