Western Monmouth Cnty. history explored at Walnford

UPPER FREEHOLD — Experience some of western Monmouth County's rich social, technological and environmental history during the annual Walnford Day celebration.

The Monmouth County Park System will sponsor Walnford Day from 11 a.m.- 5p.m. Oct. 5 at Historic Walnford, the Waln family estate that grew from a small industrial village to a Colonial revival retreat over the course of two centuries. The site is located at Crosswicks Creek Greenway in Upper Freehold.

Visitors can tour the property's 18th century home on the banks of Crosswicks Creek, visit the farm buildings and listen to the rumble and rattle of the site's 19th century gristmill. There will also be musical entertainment featuring the harpsichord and flute from 1-4 p.m., a weaving demonstration, a multi-media art exhibit showcasing "Nature in Monmouth County" and a variety of hands-on activities including a seeded dig to connect visitors with Walnford's archeology and history.

Visitors are encouraged to pack a snack or lunch to enjoy at a picnic table or on the bank of Crosswicks Creek and to spend the autumn afternoon exploring one of Monmouth County's most serene historic sites.

Walnford Day admission and parking are free.

The site is open every day from 8 a.m.to 4:30 pm.
