      Buying local will keep Garden State green
            Fresher taste. Greater food safety. Shorter distance from farm to plate. Support for nearby farmers. The arguments for buying locally grown agricultural products have been building for years. To that list, consumers can now add price as a compelling reason to spend as much of their food dollar as possible on items grown and harvested right here in New Jersey.

      Domestic ducks, geese are deserving of concern, caring
            Go to any pond or lake in the summer and you will see swimming among wild waterfowl, domestic ducks and geese. These birds - often white Pekin ducks or Mother Goose-type geese - were once Easter pets or the result of school hatching projects. No longer small and fuzzy, these domestic birds are dumped at local waterways to fend for themselves.

      Organ donors should be first to benefit from donations
            Regarding your July 10 story, "Pre- and posttransplant patients offered support," Stanley Epstein was very lucky to get a heart transplant. Over half of the 99,000 Americans on the national waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate about 20,000 transplantable organs every year.

            With summer recess upon us, many parents are thinking of ways to keep their children's minds and bodies active after those first weeks of euphoric freedom erode to boredom. Let me suggest that before you become frazzled, your local library may offer a solution.

      Legislators thanked for preservation of Shore Fund
            The Jersey Shore Partnership, on behalf of everyone who enjoys the shore, thanks the legislators who helped preserve the annual $25 million stable source of funding for shore protection and beach renourishment. The Partnership understands the tight fiscal times everyone is facing, but New Jersey has become a leader in shore protection.

      For the Record
            Due to an editing error, a letter to the editor written by Cindy Zipf of Clean Ocean Action that appeared in the June 26 Examiner incorrectly stated, "The entire Atlantic Coast contains a total potential of several months of oil and about 112 years of gas at current US consumption rates" and should have read 1.5 years of gas. We regret the error.
