The Millstone Mudhens travel baseball team, in its inaugural appearance as a team, won the Hillsborough Memorial Day Tournament. The team dropped its first two games in heartbreakers, 12-10 to the Brooklyn Bulldogs, and 9-8 to Hopewell Township. Then the drive for the championship began behind tournament co-MVPs Jordan Winston and Zach Turner's consistent pitching, hitting and defensive play.

Behind the pitching of Dominick Gasparro and the defensive support of Tristan Millet, the Mudhens beat South Brunswick, 8-7. The game was capped off by a two-run, walk-off double by Jake Faber. Next, the Mudhens had to avenge its previous loss to Hopewell. Jimmy McAffe took the ball and shut down the strong-hitting Hopewell team, 9-4, supported by the offensive fireworks of five RBIs, two doubles and a triple supplied by Anthony Morrone.

In the championship game against undefeated Hillsborough, Zach Turner, the staff ace, came through with a strong performance on the mound and at the plate. Jordan Winston, the team's closer, shut down Hillsborough in the final inning to preserve the victory. Winston also flashed some leather with two diving catches in the outfield.

Throughout the tournament the team was anchored by Robbie Matos from behind the plate, picking off stray runners on the base paths, the solid outfield play of Kyle Ruetsch and Pino Henry, and the offensive support of designated hitter Jeremias Enriquez

The players are Dominick Gasparro, Jeremias Enriquez, Zach Turner, Jim McAfee, Jordan Winston, Tristan Millet, Pino Henry, Anthony Morrone, Robbie Matos, Kyle Ruetsch and Jake Faber.

The Allentown Attack, a U-12 boys team playing in the premier division of MOSA, wrapped up their spring campaign with a 3-1 victory over Middletown this past Sunday. The Attack finished in first place in the division, compiling eight victories while losing only once and tying one game. It was a very successful season as the Attack outscored their opponents by scoring 29 goals while only allowing eight. The highlight of the season was the team's win at the Voorhees Memorial Day weekend tournament. The Attack played fives games, winning all five matches and outscoring their opponents 19-4. The Attack defeated a select team from Gloucester County in the finals by the score of 5-0. The Attack are coached by Chuck Darrell, Jody Scarano and Bill Byrnes. The team members are David Cohen, Steven Hensley, Anthony Derisi, Alec Scarano, Justin Patrylow, Patrick Dawes, Alexander Valentino, Brady Koontz, Kevin Gallagher, Jake Calvitti, Evan Byrnes, Cameron Mory, Ryan Darrell and goalkeeper Nathaniel Marquez. The coaches and parents are extremely proud of the team's accomplishments. The Attack will take a well-earned break from training before resuming in preparation for the fall season.

The Allentown United U15 girls had a busy weekend, playing on Saturday against Colts Neck in the MAPS league, and then Sunday afternoon at home to Wall. They got off to a very quick start on Saturday, in the fifth minute when they were awarded a direct free kick on the edge of the box. Sweeper Shelby Doll took the kick, very efficiently launching it over the keeper's head and into the net to give her team a lead that they would not relinquish.

For the next 75 minutes they played solid, hard-tackling soccer as the game flowed back and forth. Shannon Buckley in goal was again outstanding, making several key saves and staying strong as Colt Neck was awarded two penalties - both of which they were unable to convert, and thus United went home the winners. With just 11 girls available to play on a very hot and humid afternoon, the Allentown girls came up big again to take maximum points.

On Sunday they were at home to Wall against the team that they knocked out of the State Cup a month ago. United knew that they would need to get off to a quick start against a strong Wall squad out to avenge the Cup defeat. As with the previous day's game, it was United who once again were first out of the blocks. They went on the offensive from the opening whistle, and right on 10 minutes they forced a corner, taken by Dawn Taylor. She sent the perfect cross into the box where it was met perfectly by Ashley Perritt, who headed it into the back of the net. Christa Bonham got another goal a few minutes later, and Allentown was looking unstoppable. Just before the break, Perritt got her second, a nice shot from the edge of the area, over the keeper's head to give her team an insurmountable lead.

The second half resumed with United dominating on defense, but always looking very threatening up front with Bonham and Chelsea Donnigan continuing to make some great runs. Goalie Shannon Buckley was called upon just once to make a serious save, leaping high to fist away a strong shot from the Wall striker. After that, she made her job actually look easy; with smart positioning and quick reflexes off her line, she always seemed to be in the right place to shut down any threats. The game finished at 3-0, another solid all-around performance from the 12 girls available to play.

This week United has another full schedule with games midweek against the Manalapan Mavericks and Jersey Knights, before taking part in a tournament at Fort Dix over the weekend.
