The Millstone Stingers U-10 boys opened up their spring season on a cold, overcast day this weekend away at Middletown. The Stingers were looking to show off their hard work that they put in over the off season as they came out on fire and ready to play. As they took to the field, it was not long before they would score as Nick Sample did some smooth footwork past the defenders to put the Stingers on the board. The Stingers kept the pressure on when they fired numerous shoots on goal when defender Justin Paglia pushed up a pass to Bryan Walkley who then put one into the back of the net for their second goal. The Stingers were keeping their offense fresh with key substitutions from Nick Pritchard, Kevin Towel, and newcomer David Calabrese, leaving the Stingers up 2-1 at the half. As the second half started, the Stingers started right where they left off. With a run up the side by Jack Giglia to an excellent pass over to the middle to Nick Sample who put one in for his second goal, Middletown S.C. was looking to keep the pressure on themselves as they pushed their way in to tie up the game at 3-3, but the Stingers would not have it. The Stingers were looking to leave this game with a win, and they did just that. As the "Wall," the Stingers defense, Thomas Malik, Justin Paglia, Jordan Herzog, and David Cifelli, stepped up and held Middletown down, so the Stingers offense could do their stuff. They turned up the heat when Bryan Walkley cross passed to Nick Sample, who popped another one for his third of the day and a hat trick. With only minutes left in the game Jack Giglia passed to Walkley who passed to Sample who passed to Connor Bednarz who put it in for the Stingers' fifth and final goal, giving the Stingers the win they were looking for to start the season off, 5-3 over Middletown S.C. On April 15, the Stingers will take on Freehold Storm at home.
The Allentown Xtreme U-10 boys soccer team opened their last season as an 8v8 team last Wednesday in a tougher MOSA division than last fall. They opened the season at home against Toms River. Just five minutes into the game, Allentown's Brody Zauner sent a corner kick to Matt DeRisi. DeRisi deflected it to Kevin Periera who found the net. Toms River tried to counter, but Xtreme goalie Josh Samuels held firm. Twenty minutes into the first half, defender Robert Ellerson sent a long ball up to Zauner, who made a short pass to William Sjaastadt. Will shot and scored from 25 yards out.
The second half started out with a goal by Toms River. Up 2-1, Allentown turned to a strong defense of Joey Patrylow, Rory Green, Kevin Primich and Connor Sullivan. The defense held strong through the second half. Offensive threats were made by Justin Scarano and Eric Sillivan throughout the second half. Toms River's keeper made some great saves. The Xtreme has now won eight games in a row. The final was 2-1.
