Three Millstone wrestlers came home with medals from the state tournament this month. Matt Doskoczynski finished first with a 4-2 win in the final round. Jack Giglia came home with a seventh-place medal and finished his season with a record of 50-4. Andrew Marr came home with gold with an overtime win that capped off an undefeated season. Each wrestler got to stand on the state podium with all eight medalists in their class. A week earlier, Andrew and Jack also dominated at the Best of The Best showdown by decisively defeating the South Jersey League's champions at their respective weight classes. Congratulations to all Millstone wrestlers who have what it takes to compete in such an aggressive sport.

UFA 40 opened up the spring season with a game at home to Middletown SC. With the majority of the 2006 squad returning, UFA was looking for a strong start to the year. A well-matched first half saw the teams go into the break tied at 0-0. Unfortunately, it wouldn't stay that way, because not long after the restart, Middletown took the lead on a well-worked sequence of passes. Just 10 minutes later they were two up, and shortly after made it 3-0. UFA fought back, with Amaro Pereira, the leading goalscorer from last season, getting on the scoresheet. He took a Beckham-style free-kick from 20 yards out, bending the ball up and over the wall and into the left-hand corner of the net - a great shot, to bring UFA back into the game. For the remaining 10 minutes of the match it was one-way traffic, with the home team pressing to get another goal. It would be Pereira again, forcing a loose ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble. That was how the game would end, a 3-2 loss to open the season. Next week UFA is at home to Brick.
The Allentown United U15 girls opened their season with a doubleheader this weekend. On Saturday they were at home to Wall Fusion in a MAPS game, and on Sunday again at home, against Monmouth Coast Ocean Rage from the MOSA Premier League. Saturday's game began in fine fashion, with Chelsea Donnigan collecting the ball on the right of midfield, racing down the wing to the corner before firing a cross into the box. There it was met by a charging Amanda Kyle, who volleyed the ball into the net for a record-setting goal, scored just 30 seconds after the kick-off. Kyle's goal was especially gratifying for everyone on the team, because she has been with the team since its U9 days and has been one of its biggest supporters and contributors throughout her tenure.
United would not look back after this quick start. Donnigan got the second tally later on in the game, before Wall pulled one back. Dawn Taylor added an insurance goal in the second half, but the United were never in danger of losing this one. They controlled play with good passing, solid tackling and 100 percent effort from the whole squad. Shelby Doll had a fine performance in her debut as sweeper.
Comparatively, Sunday's game against Monmouth Coast was a letdown. Playing against a weaker team that was content to kick and run, United ending up playing down to their level. With no real flow to the game, Allentown always seemed out of sync. Although they never looked like losing, they never really looked as comfortable on the ball as they did the previous day. The game would end in a 2-2 tie, with the United goals coming from a returning Gabby Horner (a nice header) and Ashley Perritt on a sweetly struck penalty.
Due to the approaching spring break, the girls will not play again until April 14.
