UFA40 wrapped up the fall season with a clinical dismantling of Holmdel. Playing on a frozen but decent surface visiting UFA took control from the onset. Leading goalscorer Amaro Pereira was the first to get his name on the score sheet, a simple tap in after five minutes. Dan Caruso made it 2-0 a few minutes later on a finely headed ball into the top corner.

The visitors continued to dominate, moving the ball around smoothly with some fast one-touch soccer. Brit Robert Butters would be the next to grab a goal after Steve Sinai slipped through the perfect pass. Moments later he got his second as UFA pushed forward at will. Just before the half, Pereira would get his second, and also the goal of the match when he collected the ball on the half way line, slipped it past the onrushing defender and raced the 50 yards to goal. With another defender bearing down on him, and the goalie advancing, he calmly blasted the ball into the back of the net to give UFA a very comfortable 5-0 cushion going into the break.

The second half resumed with more of the same — Butters completed his hat-trick with a fine goal after Caruso launched one of his patented long throws into the six-yard box. David Sebag got in on the act following some nice solo play down the left-hand side, ending in a strong shot to the top of the net. Pereira got his third and then sweeper Alan Nicholls scored his fourth of the season (a personal record). Last but not least, retired Rugby player Didier Mory scored a nice one-touch goal after fellow defender John Cochran headed a through ball right to him just in front of the net.

This was an overwhelming display of fast-moving soccer. The passes were crisp, with everyone unselfishly playing their part. Dan Caruso had possibly his finest outing for the team after recently completing his Coaching E License. Avi Sedon had his usual efficient game, while keeper Martin Scarano recorded the shut out.

UFA will resume outdoor play in March after an indoor season scheduled at the new Bob Smith Soccer facility in Robbinsville.

Monmouth University senior linebacker Mike Castellano was named to the Sport’s Network I-AA Mid-Major All-American Team.

Castellano, a graduate of Freehold Township, was second on the team in tackles with 77 including 46 solo. Six of his stops were behind the line of scrimmage and he had three interceptions and two quarterback sacks. He finished his stellar career with 218 tackles and seven pass interceptions. He was earlier named to the All-Northeast Conference Team for the third time.

Castellano helped lead the Hawks to a 10-2 record this fall. Monmouth won the Northeast Conference Championship and hosted the Gridiron Football Classic in West Long Branch on Dec. 2. San Diego beat Monmouth, 27-7, in the inaugural edition of the game. The Hawks were ranked No. 2 in the final Sports Network Mid-Major Poll.
