WCTC AM celebrates 60th anniversary

WCTC AM 1450, Somerset section of Franklin, celebrated 60 years of excellence in radio broadcasting Oct. 11 with the official rededication of its building in memory of the late Anthony "Tony" Marano.
The building was scheduled to be officially rededicated as the Tony Marano Broadcast Center by Greater Media Inc. President and CEO Peter Smyth. Marano was a former Greater Media executive and was known to football and basketball fans as the voice of Rutgers University sports.
A resident of Somerset, Morano began his career in radio at WCTC as a part-time morning newsman while still in college. He became the full-time night newsman and sports editor in 1949, and was promoted to news director in 1952. Marano was named assistant station manager in 1959, was promoted to general manager in 1965, and in 1970 became vice president of the Raritan Valley Broadcasting Co., licensee of radio stations WCTC and WMGQ. Marano was named secretary of Greater Media Inc., the parent company of Raritan Valley Broadcasting, in 1991.
He led the construction effort of the new building at 78 Veronica Ave. in Somerset and the stations' relocation from downtown New Brunswick.
Besides his achievements in the radio industry, Marano was known for his dedication to civic causes, volunteering thousands of hours to local organizations. Marano died in 2005 t age 78.
Scheduled to participate at the event were current and past WCTC employees; New Brunswick Mayor Jim Cahill; Franklin Mayor Brian Levine; Bob Mulcahy III, athletic director at Rutgers University, New Brunswick; Peter Smyth, president and CEO of Greater Media Inc.; and the Marano family.
SCORE Chapter 36 of Monmouth County, is presenting "Buying and Selling in Foreign Markets," a breakfast seminar open to the public, Oct. 18 from 8:30-10:30 a.m., at the main office Executive Suites, Second Floor, 12 Christopher Way, Eatontown.
Learn how to find foreign business opportunities; identify legitimate overseas associates; utilize federal, state, and private resources; and understand the role of using the Internet in international trade. Other topics will include how favorable exchange rates can improve profits and how to reduce the cost of goods through imports.

The Central Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO Central Jersey) will host the first in a series of marketing workshops Oct. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Western Monmouth Chamber of Commerce, 17 Broad St., Freehold.
The first in a three-part series of marketing workshops, "Successful Selling Techniques ... For Women Only" will be presented by Sylvia Allen of Allen Consulting, an award-winning author and sponsorship sales expert. Women business owners and executives are invited to attend the workshop.
