The Millstone United Travel Soccer Club (MUTS) is looking for boys and girls who want to improve their soccer skills, make new friends, and play in a positive environment in their hometown. More than 100 Millstone children already participate on the nine teams that MUTS now fields. And they're looking to create even more teams. MUTS participates in the Monmouth Ocean Soccer Association, which limits travel to games in only those two counties. Games are played on Sunday afternoons. Teams typically practice 1-2 times per week in season, and reasonable fees are usually offset by league or team fundraisers.

The June 3 tryout times are :

3-4:15 p.m.- U8 and U9 boys and girls, U-10 Girls

4:15-5:30 p.m. - U10 boys, U11 boys and girls

5:30-6:45 p.m. - U12, 13 and 14 boys

6:45-8 p.m. - U12, 13, 14 and 15 girls

All players on current MUTS teams are required to attend the tryouts. Certified trainers will manage the process, and will evaluate all players. Coaches will also be on hand to observe and answer questions from parents. Players should sign up at the registration desk between 30-45 minutes before each tryout to ensure a prompt start.

It's not too late to get on the field and try out for a MUTS team. For more info, see http://www.millstonesoccer.com.

The U9 X-Treme boys are now 8-0-1 in MOSA after a commanding 6-1 win in Marlboro this past Sunday. The scoring started early when William Sjaastadt nailed a direct kick from 25 yards out into the back of the net. Goal number two was made as Eric Sullivan had a shot that a Marlboro defender deflected into the net. First-half goalie Josh Samuels needed just two saves. Goal number three came when defender Brody Zauner assisted Tommy McCarthy for a strong shot that Marlboro's goalie had no chance. A strong defense of Joey Patrylow, Kevin Primich, and Robert Ellerson kept Allentown in the lead.

The second half started in the rain, but that did not dampen the X-Treme's will to score. Jake Alessi took a cross from Eric Sullivan to make it 4-0. Second-half goalie Tommy McCarthy stopped two penalty shots in the second half. Rory Green and Connor Sullivan provided an unbreakable defense. Goals five and six came from Brody Zauner and were assisted by Kevin Pereira and Eric Sullivan. Forward Justin Scarano had both multiple crosses and shots on goal. The game was cut short by a thunderstorm. The X-Treme plays in Hopewell this weekend for a Memorial Day tournament.

The UFA 40 played at Oak Glenn Park in Howell on Sunday morning against a team that has not beaten them in four years. That remarkable run came to an abrupt end less than 10 minutes after the opening kick-off. Howell went ahead on a fast break away, their striker finishing with a strong shot that left keeper Martin Scarano with no chance. They followed this up with two more goals in quick succession to take a commanding lead. Player Manager and sweeper Alan Nicholls was at fault, in part, on all three goals. Normally a solid defender, Nicholls played possibly his worst 45 minutes since forming the team in 2002 and may have trouble winning his place in the team next week. The second half got under way with UFA determined to make amends for the first half's poor showing. They spent the next 45 minutes pressing Howell all the way, with Amaro Pereira getting a quick goal right after the restart on a nice cross from Mike Leyden. Bemba Buruschkin came close on several occasions, drawing a penalty after getting fouled in the box. Unfortunately, despite hitting a firm well placed shot, Pereira saw the kick saved by the goalie who guessed right. At the other end the UFA defense settled down in front of keeper Scarano and was able to turn away any offensive threats that Howell was able to mount. The game finished with UFA losing 3-1 and the string of winless games is now at 3 and counting. Next week, they are away to Brick in what may well be another tough match as several key members of the squad are taking part in Memorial Day tournaments with their kids.

The Allentown United U14 girls had another busy weekend of soccer, as they played in a tournament in Hightstown on May 13, winning one game on a very exciting penalty shoot-out before losing the second to a strong East Windsor select squad.

On Sunday, Mother's Day, they would resume MOSA league play with a home game against the Battle of Monmouth Power, who were unbeaten in almost two years of MOSA Premier play. Coach Amaro Pereira went to his newly favored 4-4-2 line up, giving his team more of a holding presence in midfield. If they were to have any chance of winning the game, this is where the battle would have to be won.

United took the opening kick-off, and from the first minute, through the final whistle, they looked as if they were the champions. Every lose ball was contested, passes were smooth and quick, and players were constantly talking, supporting and pushing each other to play at the top of their game. After 35 minutes the teams went in for the half-time break tied, but with United dominating overall play.

The second half resumed with both teams picking up where they left off, playing very exciting end-to-end soccer. With 20 minutes left in the game, midfielder Ashley Perritt turned on a ball 20 yards from goal and fired it into the roof of the net to give United a lead that they would not relinquish. For the remainder of the game United maintained their composure, sticking to the game plan. They defended with authority, while at the same time continuing to push forward and create multiple threats to the Power's goal.

The final whistle blew on the 70th minute, United had the win that would move them into second place in the league, and the Battle of Monmouth Power would see their unbeaten streak come to and end. This was a very cleanly contested game, well-coached and well-officiated with both sides, putting on a true soccer exhibition for Mother's Day. Allentown United's squad consisted of Kelly Bailey, Diana Braun, Shannon Buckley, Angelique Calise, Meghan DeBoer, Shelby Doll, Chelsea Donnigan, Brittany Hodul, Brittany Holbrook, Ashley Pereira, Ashley Perritt, Katie Shields, Dawn Taylor, Meghan Valnoski and Brittany Worrall. Amanda Kyle is the team manager and Amaro Pereira is the head coach.

Next week United are at home to Monmouth Coast in the penultimate game of the season.

This week's U14 girls game against Monmouth Coast was canceled after the visitors failed to field a side. Allentown United get three points for the forfeit which counts as a win. To make up for the lack of an opponent they held an impromptu practice match with the team going up against trainers, parents and even the three-man referee crew, led by Charlie Nicholls. This would prove to be a very strenuous work out, with the seniors' skill and experience eventually coming out on top in a 2-0 win. On Memorial Weekend, United travel south to take part in The Virginian Cup, a national tournament that attracts over 600 teams to Virginia.
