The Allentown Charge U11 team got back to its winning ways this Sunday as it took on the Sayreville Huskies in Sayreville. Though the Charge had only 11 players and no substitutes, their conditioning paid off and they dominated most of the game. Sarah Mottram got the scoring started 15 minutes into the first half after she faked out a defender and shot the ball past the Huskie goalie. Sarah again was instrumental in the second goal by crossing the ball in front of the Huskie goal, which hit a Huskie defender and deflected into the goal for a 2-0 Allentown lead.
Strong play by the entire team made the 2-0 win very sweet as it lifted them off the bottom of the table. Members included Kelly Rocklein, Krysta Plummer, Sarah Mottram, Jamie Perritt, Jillian Frein, Erin Primich, Kelly Tohill, Taylor Bachik, Kimberly Wilson, Bianca Covitz and goalie Shannon Abbott.
The U-9 boys X-treme soccer team from Allentown had a great weekend of MOSA action. The boys played a makeup game on Friday night against an unbeaten Holmdel team. It was a battle to remain in first place for the X-treme. After a scoreless first half, both teams were anxious to get a goal. First half goalie Josh Samuels made three saves. The second half was filled with action. Holmdel keeper saved a penalty kick but that didn't stop the X-Treme. With 10 minutes left, defender Brody Zauner converted a corner kick by sweeper Joey Patrylow to break the scoreless game. With a minute left in regulation Holmdel tied the game. Allentown remained in first place.
On Sunday the X-treme played their second away game of the weekend against another unbeaten team from Toms River. Allentown struck early when William Sjaastad took a pass from Justin Scarano for the first of his two goals. Number two came just minutes later on an assist from Kevin Primich. Sjaastad finished the half with an assist to Scarano who made it 3-0. Joss Samuels needed just one save in the first half.
The second half was filled with goals for the X-Treme. Matt DeResi netted a pair and second half goalie Tommy McCarthy saw some field time that earned him a goal. Strong defense by Rory Green and Connor Sullivan kept Allentown far ahead. Robert Ellerson had five saves in goal after replacing McCarthy. Eric Sullivan had one assist in the second half and Kevin Pereira controlled the middle. Scoring was finished when Brody Zauner took a pass from Conner Sullivan to end the game 7-1.
The X-Treme remain in first place with a record of 6-0-1 and 31 goals for and only five against.
Allentown United girls U14 team was away to the Manalapan Mavericks in a match that they would need to win, or at least get a point from if they were to remain in contact with the top of the table. Unfortunately, despite dominating the first half, they would go in to the break tied 0-0. United had several chances in front of goal but were unable to convert.
The second half resumed with United coming out a little flat, but they were able to hold on until the 55th minute when the Mavericks scored the go ahead goal. United then staged a rally, pushing forward to try to get the tying goal. Unfortunately the Mavericks caught them on the counter to go two up with just five minutes left to clinch the win and take all three points.
Next week United are at home to top-of-the-table Battle of Monmouth Power.
