The Millstone Tidalwave girls U11 travel soccer team won again last week against Wall Thunder, 2-0. Both teams played hard, late in the first half Alex Moore broke through the tight defense to score the first goal. The midfielders Caitlyn McDermott, Avery Corvino, Daniel Klehr, and the Murphy Cousins, Heather and Hannah, fought hard to find openings and create breaks. The second half opened with a lot of pressure on the back-field. The Keefe sisters, Morgan and Megan, along with Teni Egbe proved worthy and steadfast by keeping Wall to only two shots. Gihane Quintana, Kerry McCabe, Laura Karlin, Alex Moore and Larissa Goldberg worked beautifully together, with Larissa Goldberg scoring the second goal. Once again nothing got by goalie Heather McGinn who proved to be a rock for her team once again.
The Millstone Stingers U9 boys continued their winning streak this past Sunday against the Middletown Freedom. Millstone United needed to step up in a big way to hold their record at Stinger Stadium. With five minutes into the first half, striker Jack Giglia made a fast breakaway up the right side of the field to nail a shot in the lower right-hand corner for the first goal of the game. Within a few short minutes, Middletown followed up quickly with an impressive upper-90 equalizer. As the first half wound down, Striker Nick Sample made a hard drive up the middle to knock one in from the top of the key. During their half-time break, coach Bryan Walkley repeated the Stinger mantra of "beat 'em to the ball."
With only a narrow lead going into the second half, striker Nick Sample sidestepped a horde of charging Freedom players to drill home his second goal from 20 yards out. Next up was forward Kevin Towle, who came in strong to take a shot within the 18; after briefly losing the ball from a charging defender, he tenaciously regained possession to hold on and crash the cage for the Stingers' final goal. Midfielders Zach Reutsch, Connor Bednarz and Bryan Walkley tirelessly pushed the ball up through heavy traffic to make the pivotal plays for the front end of the field. Power forwards Conor Murphy and Nick Pritchard displayed selfless passing and strong, close shots at the cage. Notable mention to forward Paul Haines who made a daring, solo run toward the cage from midfield, only to be deflected by the double team response of both sweeper and keeper.
The Stinger defense restrained the Middletown Freedom to only one goal. Defensive backs Justin Paglia and Thomas Malik kept the Freedom on the outside, with swift feet and brawny boxing out. David Cifelli and Jordan Herzog laid down a series of speed bumps and offensive road blocks to Freedom's middle game; deft footwork and hard contact kept the Millstone Keepers lonely at the net for most of the second half. Giglia and Pritchard shared equal time at the goal post when not playing power forwards.
The final score was 4-1, Millstone. Next week brings the Old Bridge Dragons for another home game.
