The Millstone Avalanche U13 girls travel soccer team defeated the Long Branch Green Wave in their MOSA season opener. The match, played just a few blocks from the cold and windy oceanfront, was the inaugural game for the newly formed Avalanche team. Mackenzie Keefe and Janette Mazzaroni scored two goals each, while Cheyenne Dermody and Olivia Paschkes netted one goal apiece. Jessica Cutler, Alex Ciongoli and Emelie Klehr all put forth strong efforts. Jorie Predmore, Daniele Richard, Caroline Ticse and Mary Toth all dominated the midfield. Goalkeeper Savannah Lischick preserved the shutout.

The Millstone Tidal Waves is off to a great start, as they won their opening game against Peninsula, 3-1. Larissa Goldberg scored first with a powerful left kick, followed by Alex Moore with the next two goals, one rocketing in from about 40 feet. The team's other forwards, Kristina Kinsey, Hannah Murphy, Laura Karlen and Gihane Quintana, were all on their mark. The strong midfielders, Caitlyn McDermott, Avery Corvino, Kerri McCabe and Danielle Klehr, managed to keep the ball in play beautifully. The Keefe sisters, Morgan and Megan, along with Heather Murphy, were an unstoppable force in defense. Last but certainly not least, goalie Heather Mcginn once again did her team proud.

The Millstone Revolution U8 boys soccer team improved to 2-0 for the spring season with a 4-0 victory over the Pinebeach Tornadoes at home on Saturday. The Revolution dazzled the crowd with their wonderful passing. Kyle Moore started the scoring by taking a strategically placed pass from Sam Stephan and putting it in the back of the net. The Revolution dominating defense of Dante Ricci, Daniel Walkley, Zac Furmanec, Brian Mishkin and Charles Klher not only limited Pinebeach to two shots on goal but also provided offensive support that led to the second goal scored on a left-footed shot into the corner by Dominick Gasparro.

The Revolution continued to pepper the goal with shots as a result of the aggressive play of wingers Robbie Hetrick and Matt Blazier that wore down the Pinebeach defense. This led to the third goal of the first half which was scored by Moore. The second half was all Millstone, as Jimmy McAfee controlled the middle of the field feeding the Millstone offense with many calculated opportunities. Although the only goal in the second half was the result of a penalty kick by Gasparro, the Revolution displayed a tenacious challenging style of play that kept the ball in front of the Pinebeach goal for most of the half. The Revolution next game is on Saturday against the tenacious Toms River Storm.

The Millstone Stingers U9 boys soccer team continued on its winning path as it came out on top this Sunday, defeating the Hazlet United Mini Metros, 2-0. The game took place away at the Metros' home field, as the cold inclement weather held off long enough for the Stingers to do their thing. As Coach Walkley managed his pool of offensive players, Connor Bednarz, Bryan Walkley, Nick Sample, Jack Giglia, Conor Murphy, Zach Ruetsch, Paul Haines and Kevin Towle, he was able to keep the pressure on and the offense fresh. At the half, both teams were locked 0-0. As the second half continued, the Stingers kept on firing numerous shoots on goal that were either wide, high or nicely stopped, until Bryan Walkley blasted one in the upper 90 from the 18, giving the Stingers their first goal of the game. "The Wall" - the defensive unit of the Stingers, led by Thomas Malik, Justin Paglia, and Jordan Herzog - continued to shut down the Metros' offense as they did in the first half, allowing no shots on goal and leaving goalkeepers Nick Pritchard and Jack Giglia very little or no action at all. With only minutes left in the game, the Stingers had a goal kick taken by Bryan Walkley who sailed one down over the midfield mark to forward Nick Sample for the breakaway, with nice footwork that led to the tap in giving the Stingers their second and final goal. The Stingers take on Middletown Freedom Sunday at home.

The Millstone Patriots U11 boys travel soccer team continued their undefeated spring season with a 1-1 tie against the Toms River Predators. Playing at Toms River on Sunday through intermittent rain that created some slippery play, the Patriots played a very aggressive game with a myriad of hard-fought challenges. There was some awesome goalkeeper play by Jordan Rosenthal, and the Patriots feared "Brick Wall" defense received tremendous play from Jarret Beebe, Andrew Hruszanyk, Brandon Kokich, Danny Frazhier, Mike Mckinnis and Stefan Pappas. Dean Stephan scored the first goal of the match 12 minutes into the game with a great cross from James Taylor, and yeoman-like work from Logan Fredericks, and Ryan Debeor. At the 25-minute mark Toms River scored on a terrific goal from the 25-yard line, with a shot that was pumped into the right corner. The Patriots were able to dominate the game from this point on with the midfield play of Matty Sopher, Brian Pfeffer, James Taylor, Tommy O'Brian, and Anthony Yaccarine controlling a high percentage of the action. It was a fun game to watch since much of the play was dominated by the Patriots with precise passing and dribbling. The Patriots displayed a hunger for the ball which will keep them very competitive throughout the season.

The U14 Allentown Vultures defeated the TRY Cobras, 3-2. Alessandro (AC) Mazzone scored twice and Matt Reilly add one goal to put the Vultures ahead of the Cobras. The defense held the Cobras after the third goal. Tyler O'Neill, Garrett Hoover, Andrew Ratcliffe, and Luke Search played great back there. There was great goalkeeping by Chris Tyminski, who made key saves to lead the Vultures to victory. The Vultures were trailing 2-0 in the first half, then scored three back-to-back-to-back goals to win the game. On Sunday the Vultures were back in action again when they defeated the Manalapan Fire, 4-1. Alessandro (AC) Mazzone and Alex Furmanac scored two goals each. Great goalkeeping came from Chris Tyminski, who made key saves leading to the Vultures victory.

The U14 Allentown United girls had a busy weekend playing a double header on Saturday in the Middletown Tournament, and back on Sunday afternoon in their regularly scheduled MOSA Premier game. Saturday's first game was against MSC Rockets, and United came away winners 2-1 with both goals taken by Chelsea Donnigan, one a particularly nice play involving a cross from Ashley Perritt to Kelly Bailey, who one-timed it to Donnigan, who slammed it past the advancing keeper. In the second game, a closely contested match, United were beaten 1-0 in a hard-fought match by eventual champions CWS Spirit.

Sunday saw them up against Manalapan in what would prove to be a very evenly, but hotly contested game. United were happy to see the return of Dawn Taylor, who had been out with injury, and she would prove to be the difference in the two sides. Manalapan had a chance to take the early lead when they were awarded a penalty kick after one of their players was brought down in the box. Luckily for United the penalty kick was blasted over the bar, to keep the score tied 0-0 at the half. The second half saw much of the same with end-to-end play, Diana Braun made several key saves to keep United in it. With 20 minutes remaining it was United who were awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the area. Dawn Taylor strode up and coolly slotted the ball into the lower left corner, to give her team a lead that they would not relinquish. With four points from a possible six, United go into week three in decent shape, but with a very tough game expected next week away to Battle of Monmouth SC.

The men's UFA 40 played in a preseason scrimmage this week against a Premier team from Cranbury. UFA took the lead on an early goal from Steve Sinai, before Cranbury pulled one back on a penalty kick that was awarded after Chuck Darrell took somebody out in the box. That's how the game would stay, although player manager Alan Nicholls did come close with a header just over the bar from a corner kick. Didier Mory had a stellar performance in goal, saving a penalty shot that he had conceded after upending the Cranbury striker. Next week the season opens with a home game against reinstated Jackson.

It was a busy weekend for the Allentown X-Treme U9 boys soccer team. Playing in the Middletown Spring Kick Off and regular MOSA action, the boys won two and lost one. On Saturday, they faced FC-COPA in a rematch of last May. Allentown avenged the loss with a 4-2 victory. After going down by one early in the game, the X-Treme got a goal from Jake Alessi on an assist from William Sjaastad. Tough defense and great goalkeeping kept the game close for both sides. The half ended 2-1, with Allentown losing. A good pep talk from coach Jody Scarano charged the boys. Jake Alessi completed a hat trick with assists from Matt DeRisi and Justin Scarano. The defense held strong and with time winding down, DeRisi sent a ball to Justin Scarano to end it 4-2.

Game two of the tournament ended with a loss. It was a tough battle with William Sjaastad scoring on a penalty kick with his left foot. When asked why his left foot, he replied, "I aim better with my left even though it is not as hard." The game ended with a diving save off a penalty kick by X-Treme goalie Josh Samuels.

Sunday was back to MOSA league action. The X-Treme faced an unbeaten Ocean team away. Eric Sullivan recorded a first half shut-out in goal as the defense of Kevin Primich, Joey Patrylow, and Connor Sullivan kept Ocean out of the X-Treme's half of the field. Despite many opportunities created by Rory Green, the half ended in a 0-0 tie. Coach Martin Scarano praised the boys for controlling all aspects of the game, but reminded them the score was still tied. He challenged the boys to get a goal. Just two minutes in Sjaastad responded. That opened the gates for a quick pair of goals by Kevin Pereira and Jake Alessi both assisted by Sjaastad. Alessi then netted goal number two to make it 4-0 with 10 minutes left.

With a comfortable lead, the lines were switched up. The starting defense was put on the front line. That didn't stop the scoring. The X-Treme continued the attack as Kevin Primich took a cross from Eric Sullivan and hit a hard left-footed shot that Oceans goalie bobbled. With the ball bouncing in front of the net, the X-Tremes Brody Zauner got a foot on it to end the game 5-0. The X-Treme is now 2-0 in MOSA league action.
