Horse seminar to cover breeding issues

Equine Science Center to cosponsor Feb. 11 event

NEW BRUNSWICK — Horse owners, farm managers and veterinarians are all invited to learn more about issues involving horse breeding, foaling and raising on Feb. 11.

The annual Horse Management Seminar will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Rutgers University’s Cook College campus center in New Brunswick, according to an Equine Science Center press release.

The Equine Science Center, the New Jersey Horse Council, Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension, and the Office of Continuing Professional Education (OCPE) are sponsoring the event, according to the press release.

The seminar, which is open to the public, is particularly geared toward individuals who are considering breeding horses or getting involved in foaling or foal management, the press release states.

“This is the first time in many years in New Jersey that experts in the field of breeding and foal management have been brought together for such an intensive one-day, educational workshop,” Dr. Carey Williams, the extension specialist in horse management at Rutgers, said in the press release.

“With breeding as one of the key activities sanctioned by the proposed Right to Farm regulations,” Williams said, “we felt that the subject was exceptionally timely for people possibly considering adding that activity to their horse operation.”

For the seminar, Williams said, Rutgers “tapped some of the most highly regarded experts” to make presentations and answer questions.

Williams, who was also a Pratt fellow in equine nutrition at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Va., more commonly known as Virginia Tech, is organizing the annual seminar. He will discuss broodmare nutrition, according to a press release.

The seminar will address many other topics as well, such as the economics of breeding horses, presented by Dr. Gail Hoff-Carmona. Director of the Los Alamos Dressage Center in Freehold Township, she is a dressage medalist and a well-known breeder of Arabians and Swedish warmbloods, according to the press release.

The seminar will also feature “Breeding Options: Natural Cover to Artificial Insemination.” Dr. Dean Neeley, co-owner of Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, will give the presentation. An expert in equine reproduction, he has credentials in academic circles and is also a veterinary practitioner, according to the press release.

Dr. David Marshall, an assistant professor and equine extension veterinarian at the University of Delaware, Newark, teaches courses in equine science, pregnancy and foal physiology, as well as mare and stallion reproduction. He will discuss broodmare and foal health issues, according to the press release.

“Getting Ready for Foaling” will be presented by Dr. Dan Keenan, co-owner of Keenan-McAlister Equine in Bordentown. He is a widely known expert in reproduction, lameness and wellness care, according to the press release.

“Management of Foals” and “Nutrition to Weaning” will be presented by Dr. Sarah Ralston, an associate professor at Cook College and the founder of the Young Horse Teaching and Research Program at Cook College, according to the press release.

In addition to the educational presentations, the seminar will feature informational displays, door prizes, networking opportunities and ample time for one-on-one discussions, according to the press release.

For veterinarians, the Registry of Approved Continuing Education of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards has applied for six continuing education credits, the press release states.

The OCPE will take advance registrations for the daylong event until noon on Feb. 8. The cost for the seminar is $60 for adults and $35 for students. Those who register after Feb. 8 or at the door will be charged an additional $15 for the program.

A registration form, which can be faxed to OCPE at (732) 932-8726, is available on the Equine Science Center Web site at www.esc.rutgers.edu. Online registration can also be accessed through www.cookce.rutgers.edu.
