The Millstone Eagles Mitey Mite cheer squad rocked the cheerleading world at the Fun Day exhibition at Rutgers Athletic Center on Saturday, Oct. 1. A total of 25 Millstone girls participated in the event, along with cheerleaders from towns throughout central New Jersey. The exhibition is not officially scored, but it was clear that the ladies from Millstone knocked everyone’s doors off. Comment after comment was made by visiting Central Jersey squads. A coach from Hightstown was overheard asking Eileen Morrissey, Coordinator, “How was Millstone able to get girls who are second- and third-graders able to perform at this level?”
Morrissey attributes it to the drive and spirit of head coach Moni Saviano and her coaching staff of four assistants and three junior coaches. Their enthusiasm and dedication motivated this year’s participants to an all-star level. The following second- and third-grade girls are members of the Eagles Pop Warner squad: Mariah Adler, Ella Ahern, Taylor Andretta, Emily Bennet, Montana Blitz, Tealia Butner, Amanda Corso, Kathryn Corso, Samantha Egan, Lucy Gilch, Courtney Henig, Cayla McLaughlin, Graziella Mickiovic, Lauren Munoz, Stephanie Obusek, Nikki Pappas, Lindsay Peake, Olivia Pozza, Jenna Saviano, Alexa Scudillo, Stephanie Tobias, Andrea Trentacosti, Gabrielle Vander Gaag, Sarah Wolford, Brianna Yagos, Valerie Young and Naomi Zabasajja.

The Millstone Stingers U-9 boys travel soccer team put another notch in their belts after defeating the Toms River Fury, 1-0, on Oct. 2. This win came after defeating Toms River Celtics the week before, 3-2. At the time the Celtics had been undefeated in four seasons and had not had a goal scored against them. The Stingers, in just their first year, continue to aggressively move forward in the boys U-9 MOSA Premier Division 3. Coach Bryan Walkley has seemed to put together the right winning combination for the Millstone Stingers. With excellent offensive play from Bryan Walkley, Conner Bednarz, Jack Giglia, Conner Murphy, Paul Haines and Zach Reutsch, along with the continuous strong play of the defense of Thomas Malik, Justin Paglia, Jordan Herzog, David Cifelli, and goalie Kevin Towie, the Stingers are off to a blazing start.
This weekend the Allentown United U14 girls team was involved in the Fall Classic Soccer Tournament held in Wall Township. Despite the wet weather, their first of three games got under way at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday. Colts Neck was the opponent, a team United played them only two weeks before in the regular MOSA Division 1 game. Allentown started on the offensive right from the opening kick off with Ashley Perritt and Chelsea Donnigan making some piercing runs at the Colts Neck defense, supported on both wings by Dawn Taylor and Katie Shields. All of the pressure paid off when Chelsea Donnigan got the go-ahead goal after 10 minutes, sending her shot through a crowd of players and into the net. United did not back off, continuing to dominate play at both ends of the field. Squad members Holbrook, Horner, Deboer and Myers all went in as needed and gave valuable minutes to the team. Samantha Myers connected very well with Carolyn Horner after a speedy run down the right wing; she crossed the ball into Horner who saw her shot skim off the goalpost and go just wide. Horner had a great game supporting the forwards, with nice touches, flicking on the ball with her head on several occasions and in general being a nuisance to the Colts Neck team.
The second half resumed, and United carried on right where they left off, the defense playing solid, backed up by keeper Diana Braun, and the midfield players continuing to push forward. At this point Angelique Calise took an elbow to the face and had to leave the field for treatment. Shannon Buckley stepped in and played a faultless game at right back until Calise was able to return. At this point United got the security goal they were looking for. Ashley Perritt received the ball around 30 yards from goal, and beat one defender before turning a second player inside out and unleashed a shot over the head of the advancing goalie. 2-0 United.
That’s the way the game stayed, and unfortunately, that would be the last game of the weekend. The weather worsened, and the tournament was abandoned.
Next weekend United play in the NJ State Cup at home on Saturday, 3 p.m. game against a team from Rutherford. Sunday sees them at home in the MOSA league to East Windsor.
The Millstone Eagle Pee Wee football team won its first game of the season 6-2 over the Sayreville Leprechauns. The Eagles scored their first touchdown of the season on a sweep to the left side by running back Jackson Patterson from about 15 yards out, who followed the lead block of Jake Winston. Earlier in the first half Jake Winston ran in for what would have been the team’s first touchdown only to have it called back on a holding call. With the score 6-0 and the Eagles backed up to the Leprechauns 5-yard line, coach Masci of Millstone allowed Sayreville a safety with two minutes left on the game clock.
This allowed the Eagles to punt from the 20-yard line and move Sayreville back to midfield. Sayreville fumbled two plays later and Jake Winston recovered the fumble. This would then allow the Eagles to hold on to their first win of the season.
The Millstone Stingers U9 boys played their first tournament this season at the 13th annual Wall Fall Classic. A rainy, wind-swept day could not dampen the Stingers’ spirit and skill. Their first game was against the Wall Spitfires. Power forward Jack Giglia made a strong run up the right side of the field, while firing a direct shot to an awaiting goalie. With the ball bouncing off his wet body, Giglia followed up with a short, strong kick to put the first number on the board. Forward Conor Murphy split two defenders up the left side of the field, while crossing a pass to midfielder Bryan Walkley for a second goal that was lofted outside of the box — finding a pocket in the right hand corner of the cage. The third goal followed quickly with Walkley taking a direct kick outside of the box. The final goal of the game involved midfielder Connor Bednarz skidding a pass on the wet grass to fellow midfielder Bryan Walkley, who launched a stinger missile from thirty yards out. The end score was 4-0 Millstone.
Defensive backs David Cifelli, Jordan Herzog, Justin Paglia, and Thomas Malik were patrolling midfield for most of the two games, while fielding backfield passes to the assaulting midfielders.
The next game placed Millstone against the Maroons soccer club, from Ridgewood. Striker Jack Giglia placed the first knot on the rope with a rocket at 25 yards out. Power forwards Zachary Reutsch and Paul Haines did a fine job in chipping the ball up and across a rain soaked field; both players pounded the net relentlessly against the Maroons hardworking goalie. Midfielder Bryan Walkley put the last two points up on the board with the final score being 3-0. Defensive backs Cifelli, Paglia, and Malik continued to hold the offense with no points, as well as running down the infrequent breakaway of a wayward forward. Although goalie Kevin Towle saw little activity at the net in both games, he was able to switch at each half with forward Jack Giglia, and display his offensive talents in dribbling and shooting. Defensive back Jordan Herzog also had a chance to switch positions to power forward and knock a few hard, long shots at a slippery goalkeeper.
Due to the forecast of more inclement weather, the final day of the tournament was canceled. The Millstone Stingers will be playing this weekend in the Freehold Frightfest tournament.
