Music for tots, theater for grades 1-6, Pilates offered

Millstone Township Community Education will offer an eight-week “Music Together” class starting Oct. 20. “Music Together” is a music and movement approach to early childhood music development for infants, toddlers and preschoolers and their caregivers, using movement, singing, and a variety of instruments. Classes are offered at either 9:30-10:15 a.m. or 10:30-11:15 a.m. and will be held at the Millstone Township Community Center, Route 524/Stagecoach Road, Clarksburg section of Millstone. The fee is $112 at registration and $45 to the instructor for supplies.

Pilates, a program that combines strength and conditioning exercises, will be offered Oct. 11-Dec. 9. Maryann Howes, a certified Pilates instructor, will conduct the classes Tuesday and Friday mornings, 9:30-10:30 a.m., at Wagner Farm Park. Attendees should bring water and a mat. The fee is $128.

“Dramatic Beginnings,” a theater class for students in grades 1-6, will begin Oct. 11. The program will cover the art of theater, song and dance exercises, and stage techniques, and the last class will be a performance of a classic fairy tale. The program is limited to 15 students and will be taught by Laurie Edwards, who has extensive theater experience. The classes will be held Oct. 11-Nov. 22, 6:30-7:30 p.m., at the Elementary School music room. The fee is $70.

Free outdoor movies

slated in Roosevelt

The Roosevelt Recreation Department will offer free outdoor movies in October at the Roosevelt Public School amphitheater. Community members are invited to bring blankets and chairs for a night of free movies. In the event of inclement weather, the movies will be moved indoors at the school. The following movies are scheduled, all at 7 p.m.: The Sandlot” Oct. 1, and “Beetlejuice” Oct. 8.

Community Dance Night

in Roosevelt Oct. 29

Roosevelt Recreation will sponsor a Community Dance Night from 7-10 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Roosevelt School. The event will be led by Candace Woodward-Clough, who has training in ballroom dance, jazz, tap, acting and singing. She has acted, danced or choreographed several Off-Broadway and summer stock productions as well as movies, soap operas and videos. The event will begin with an hour of brief instruction of various types of dances, based on the interest of those in attendance. The remaining two hours will be devoted to an open dance party. Roosevelt Rec. offers

after-school theater class

The Roosevelt Recreation Department is sponsoring an after-school theater program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The workshop, “Playing Around With Theatre,” will offer students an opportunity to participate in theater games, movement, and arts activities as they learn about improvisation and character development. Classes will be held from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Oct. 20, Nov. 3 and 17, and Dec. 1, 8 and 15. The cost is $75. Roosevelt Recreation is also looking for ideas for new programs, activities and trips. Hospital auxiliary to meet Oct. 6 at CentraState

The Millstone Township Hospital Auxiliary for CentraState Medical Center will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at CentraState Medical Center, Route 537, Freehold Township, in the hospital’s main lobby.

Since much of the auxiliary’s fundraising benefits CentraState’s oncology department, the meeting will provide an opportunity to see how the money has been used.

‘Victorian Tea’ Oct. 16 at St. Joseph’s Church

The Ladies of St. Joseph’s Church, Millstone, will host a “Victorian Tea” in the church hall Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.

“Unlacing the Victorian Woman” will be presented by costume designer and historian Barbara Meyer Darlin. Finger sandwiches and other refreshments will be served. Attendees are invited to bring their own special teacup, if they desire.

Muppet Station Day

Oct. 1 in Allentown

The Allentown Public Library Association, in conjunction with the Allentown post office, will host a Muppet Station Day to celebrate the new issue of Jim Henson commemorative stamps.

The event will be held Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 16 S. Main St., Allentown. For a donation of $2, visitors to the event will receive an envelope with a new Muppet stamp and a second day of issue “Allentown Library” cancellation. An art table will be available for children of all ages to decorate their envelopes.

Applications available for AHS business academy

Allentown High School, in partnership with Commerce Bank, announced that applications for the third annual Entrepreneurial Business Academy for Service and Education (EBASE) are now available.

The EBASE is designed to prepare students to be successful business leaders. Students participating in the EBASE must successfully complete the three components of the academy program:

• Full-day leadership seminars conducted by Commerce Bank. Two are held in the junior year and three in the senior year. Two will be held at Commerce University in Cherry Hill and three at Allentown High School. Transportation to Commerce University in Cherry Hill is provided by the school district.

• A college-level business course either online or at one of several community or four-year colleges/universities in the area for dual credit (if applicable).

• An internship in a business arranged through the Senior Practicum program.

‘Light the Night’ organizers seek walkers

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will hold its signature walk-event, “Light the Night,” Oct. 8 on the Ocean Grove boardwalk at 7 p.m., with registration to start at 5 p.m.

The Southern New Jersey/Shore Region Chapter is currently seeking participants and volunteers to raise money toward the society’s mission of finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families.

“Light the Night” is the Society’s nationwide evening walk to commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants carry flickering red and white balloons along a two- to three-mile walk within their communities. Cancer survivors hold white balloons, and all other participants carry red balloons.

Individual walkers are welcome, and families and companies are invited to form teams to walk in this evening event. There is no registration fee, but participants are encouraged to raise $100 for the society’s research and patient service programs. In addition, dedication banners will be displayed to give everyone an opportunity to place a name or message in honor of or in memory of a family member or friend with cancer. Participants will also be awarded a variety of prizes based on their total fundraising efforts.

Walnford Day celebration

slated for Oct. 2

The Monmouth County Park System will host Walnford Day Oct. 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Historic Walnford in Crosswicks Creek Park, Upper Freehold.

The day will celebrate the anniversary of the Waln family at Walnford, the small industrial village that was their home for 200 years. The event will feature tours of the home; flute and harpsichord duets in the front parlor; exhibits; hands-on crafts and other activities, including an archaeological dig; an opportunity to see the mill in action; and the blacksmith at his trade.

Alzheimer’s Assoc. schedules walk

The Alzheimer’s Association will hold its Southern Regional Memory Walk on Oct. 1 at Little Silver Park.

The noncompetitive, 3-mile event will begin with registration in the park at Point Pleasant Beach at 8:30 a.m. and includes entertainment, food, celebrities and prizes, according to an Alzheimer’s Association press release.

Last year’s walk raised more than $450,000. Proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services of the Alzheimers Association and help raise public awareness of the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s.

The Alzheimer’s Association, based out of Oradell in Bergen County, is committed to providing support, assistance and information to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their families and care partners. The organization supports research into the causes, prevention, treatment and cure of the disease, according to the press release.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that there are currently more than 350,000 individuals and their care partners in the state who are struggling to cope with the challenges of Alzheimer’s.

This year, the Memory Walk will begin at 10 a.m. Yvette Ludwig, Mrs. New Jersey, will attend the walk as a celebrity guest, the press release states. For more information, contact the Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-883-1180 or visit www.alznj.org.
