Parent mentors sought

for single mothers

Parent mentors are needed to help families at risk.

Volunteers in Public Service, through the Monmouth County Division of Social Services, is seeking volunteers to help single mothers meet the demands of parenting.

Some single mothers in need of assistance were abused or neglected while growing up and never had the opportunity to develop a trusting relationship with another person, according to a press release form Volunteers in Public Service. These women live in social isolation and have difficulty meeting their own needs and the needs of their children. A parent mentor volunteer is a friend who can help to teach and reinforce parenting skills and foster understanding of child development.

Parent mentors develop a nurturing and trusting relationship with the single mother and can help create a safe, nurturing home, reducing the risk of child neglect or abuse.

Wanted are women over the age of 21 who are parents, grandparents, or have had experience in caring for children. Only a few hours a week on a regular basis is required. Evening training, ongoing support and supervision is provided by Volunteers in Public Service.

Call (732) 845-2073 for more information.

Project EAT seeks

new members

Project EAT (Everyone Ate Today) is recruiting schools and organizations in the county to help feed the hungry.

Project EAT, a program of the Monmouth County Division of Social Services, Volunteers in Public Service, is a food-collection program where schools and organizations collect food at least three times each year to help their local food pantry feed families in need.

The county began the program in 1994 when some area food pantries expressed a need for more donated food to meet the increase in the number of families requesting food. Two Howell schools answered the call, and since then, more than 50 schools, clubs and organizations have joined them. But some area food pantries are still experiencing a need for more donations.

For more information, call Mary Ellen Hemenway, (732) 845-2073.
