‘Relay for Life’ kick-off event set for Feb. 11

  • The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of New Egypt will host a kick-off rally on Feb. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Indian Rock Resort, 920 West Veterans Highway (Route 528).
  • “Relay for Life” is an overnight, fun-filled American Cancer Society event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and raise money for the fight against cancer.

Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents, sleeping bags and sneakers to participate in the largest fund-raising walk in the nation.

“Relay for Life” brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and community groups. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of eliminating cancer.

“Relay for Life” returns to New Egypt High School on June 4-5. Volunteers are needed to organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, find refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment, and lend their support in any way.

An R.S.V.P. is required for the kick-off event. For more information on the Feb. 11 kick-off, or to volunteer on the Relay For Life Committee, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit www.cancer.org.

    Talk on Communists

    in Czechoslovakia slated

“The Politics of Fear: Creating the Enemy,” a program about the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, will be presented at 2 p.m. March 13 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Manalapan. The program is free.

The program will be based on the documentary film “A Trial in Prague” and a discussion of the book “Under a Cruel Star” by Heda Margolius Kovaly.

Jack Needle, a professor of history at Brookdale Community College, and Zuzana Justman, Emmy Award winner who authored and directed “A Trial in Prague,” will speak at the discussion. The film is a documentary about the Slansky trial in Prague in 1952; Kovaly, the book’s author, is the widow of one of the 11 victims executed after the trial.

The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft. Copies of “Under a Cruel Star” are available at the library’s circulation desk. For more information, call (732) 431-7222.
