The Allentown United U-12 girls travel soccer team won the Memorial Day Manalapan tournament this past weekend. In the first game against the Manalapan Mavericks, the United got a quick goal from Diana Braun. Shelby Doll made a great pass and Diana one-timed it with her left foot to give United a 1-0 lead. Ashley Perritt converted a penalty kick to make it 2-0 United. In the second half, the Mavericks came out strong, but United’s defense, led by Brittany Hodul, Meghan Valnoski, Ashley Pereira and Angelique Calise, shut them down. Dawn Taylor, Brittany Worrall, Danielle Turner, Samantha Myers, Katie Mottola and Amanda Kyle all had a great game. Shannon Buckley was outstanding in goal for United. Final score was 2-0 United.
United next defeated the N.Y.-based Bohemia Blizzard 2-1. United’s defense and the superb play of goalie Shannon Buckley kept the Blizzard from scoring. With 5 minutes left in the half, Diana Braun gave United a 1-0 lead with a great shot from outside the box. In the second half, Dawn Taylor assisted Shelby Doll to give the United a 2-0 lead. Blizzard got a goal toward the end of the game to make the final score 2-1.
In the first game on Sunday morning, United the defeated the previously unbeaten BOM Fire 2-0. With 10 minutes left in the half, United went ahead 1-0 on a Diana Braun breakaway score. In the second half, BOM kept attacking, but United’s defense kept clearing and stopping them. Shannon Buckley, United’s goalie, was on every ball. With 15 minutes to go in the game and United hanging to a 1-0 lead, the BOM Fire goalie came out to the 18-yard line and deflected a breakaway shot by Diana Braun toward midfield, and Dawn Taylor one-timed the deflection into the net for a 2-0 United victory and a trip to the championship game.
In the championship game, United defeated the West Windsor Fusion 4-1, although the game was much closer than the scored indicated. United got off to a great start and scored two goals by Shelby Doll in the first 10 minutes of the game. In the second half, both teams were attacking back and forth. The Allentown Attack U-9 boys travel team wrapped up their spring campaign this past weekend at the Burlington Township Memorial Day Weekend Tournament. The Attack played three games and went 2-0-1. They defeated Rancocas Valley 3-2 in their first match. The second game was against a team from Medford and they came away with a 3-1 victory. The last game was the toughest, as the Attack fell behind 2-0 to the Hibernians early in the game. As has become symbolic of their effort all season, the Attack came roaring back to take a 3-2 lead. The Hibernians came back to tie the score, and the game finished in a hard fought 3-3 tie. The Attack’s cumulative record for their spring campaign was 11-0-2 in what was an extremely successful season. Russell Nicholson had three goals in the tournament to lead the Attack. Alec Scarano had two goals, and Steven Hensley, Alexander Valentino, Anthony Derisi and Cameron Mory each scored one goal apiece as the Attack displayed a well-rounded offense. Allentown’s defense put forth a very strong effort in the tournament against some very good competition. The defensive effort was led by Ryan Darrell, Evan Byrnes, Jake Calvitti and Nicholas Miles. Patrick McCarthy manned the nets for the Attack and made several important stops. Justin Patrylow and Patrick Dawes had strong performances for the Attack throughout the tournament as they preserved their undefeated record.
UFA 40 FC played at home this week to a team from Toms River. UFA’s squad was down to the bare bones, just able to field 11 players, with no subs available. Several players were involved over the Memorial Weekend with their kids’ soccer tournaments. Toms River on the other hand came in raring to go with a squad of 16 players. UFA were the first to open the scoring with a tremendous solo effort from Alfred Treska after 10 minutes. Toms River pressed hard at the other end, only to see UFA go two up on a fine goal from Adam Klobucista.
Then just before the half, the visitors pulled one back after the UFA defense was caught flat footed as Toms River beat the offside trap to score their first. With no substitutes available, UFA knew that they needed to get another quick goal to have any hope of securing the victory before their team became overrun by their fresher opponents. UFA got that goal right off the restart, when Klobucista received the ball on a mammoth punt from goalie Martin Scarano, controlled it and smoothly put it past the advancing keeper.
Shortly after that, Toms River had a player dismissed with a red card for a flagrant foul, followed by dissent, leaving the referee no option but to send him off. At this point, UFA took control of the game, advancing the score to 5-1, before Toms River scored their second. Treska and Klobucista finished off the scoring with their third and fourth goals, respectively, for a final tally of 7-2.
Honorable mention must be given to Didier Mory who came close on several occasions, playing for the first time as an out-and-out striker. Next week UFA 40 FC is at home to South River.
