The Upper Freehold Regional Men’s Softball League is holding registration for individuals ages 30 and older. Deadline to register is April 30. Games will be played primarily on Saturday mornings with the possibility of some weeknight games during the month of August. The season begins on August 1 and will run until mid-late October. Games will be played at the Byron Johnson Recreational Facility on Ellisdale Road in Upper Freehold. Individual registration is $85.

League play will be conducted with ASA oversight and in accordance with local rules. The Upper Freehold Regional Men’s Softball League Board of Directors will conduct a draft after the close of the registration period for the purpose of placing players new to the league onto existing teams or to assist in forming new teams. Final team rosters will consist of 14-16 players depending on participation level.

Debra Vento hasn’t stopped setting records. Now a freshman at Duke University, the 2003 Adidas Outdoor National Scholastic High Jump Champion has already set the Blue Devils’ high jump record, raising it to 5-10 3/4. She set the record in finishing first at the Carolina Invitational. The mark is a NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the frosh. Vento and the Blue Devils will compete at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships this weekend at the University of North Carolina.

Vento, a graduate of Freehold Borough High School, won four NJSIAA Meet of Champions titles in indoor and outdoor track during her scholastic career. She set the outdoor MOC mark at 5-10 and her best-ever high school jump of 5-10 1/2 is the second best in state history. In all, including relay, sectional and group meets, Vento won 12 NJSIAA titles.

It’s shaping up as a great indoor season for University of Michigan senior Lindsey Gallo. The Howell High School graduate, who is a junior eligible, has already won five races, set a field house record and qualified for the NCAA championships.

Gallo ran a personal best 4:40.91 in winning the one-mile run at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The mark was a NCAA provisional qualifier. At that same meet, she anchored Michigan’s distance-medley relay and garnered a NCAA qualifying mark of 11:11:58.

At the Michigan Invitational held at Central Michigan University, Gallo won the 800-meter race in a personal best 2:11.97, which was also a new CMU facility record for the event.

Gallo was a double winner at the Indiana Quad, capturing the mile in 5:00.77 and the 3,000 in 9:57.04.

The Big 10 Championships are Feb. 28-29 at Iowa City. The NCAA’s are March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Battle of Monmouth Rebels, a boys U10 Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association National I travel team, is looking for dedicated players born between 8/1/93 and 7/31/94 to fill out their roster.
