The Allentown United U9 boys travel soccer team defeated the Alliance Impact 5-0 this past Saturday. The United got off to a fast start as it pressed the attack from the outset. The forward line of Steven Hensley, Alec Scarano and Anthony Derisi kept the pressure on, scoring three goals early in the first half to take the lead. Anthony Derisi scored twice and Steven Hensley put in the other goal. The defense, led by Ryan Darrell, Evan Byrnes and Cameron Mory, thwarted the Alliance’s attack. The United added two second-half goals to secure the victory as Alexander Valentino and Ryan Darrell scored. Russell Nicholson played a strong game at midfield. Justin Patrylow and Nicholas Miles kept the pressure on up front for the United. Jake Calvitti and Patrick Dawes helped prevent the Alliance from scoring as Patrick McCarthy earned his second shutout of the season. The United play the Point Pleasant Vipers in an away game this coming Saturday.
The Allentown United U12 girls travel soccer team improved its record to 2-0 with a convincing victory over the Lacey Lightning Bolts, 8-1. The United got off to a fast start by scoring in the second minute of the game. The team scored five times in the first half and was leading 5-1 at halftime. In the second half, the United scored three more goals to make the final score. Scoring the goals for the United were Ashley Perritt, Danille Turner and Diana Braun. The next game is scheduled for Saturday in Berkley.
The Allentown United U14 boys fought a hard defensive game against the Pineland Dragons on Sept. 20, losing 2-0. The Dragons were held to only one goal in the first half by a tough defense led by goalie Jarrett Kunze. Defensive sweeper Danny Santos played a strong game with Sean Miller, Nick SaLemme, Karan Madan, Ethan Dale and Taylor Ross rounding out the defense. In the second half Allentown let only one goal slip by with Joey Warner in goal. Jimmy Search, Dean Search, Adam Fleischacker, Steven Monticello, Pace Nalbone and Jarrett Kunze played a tireless offense. Allentown’s next game is away against the Lakewood Lazers on Saturday.
The Kean University Coach’s Basketball Chalk Talk will be held Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kean’s D’Angola Gymnasium. Guest speakers will include Bobby Hurley of St. Anthony’s High School (topic — basketball conditioning drills); Gary Waters of Rutgers University, New Brunswick (topic — transition game); Fran Fraschilla, an ESPN TV analyst and former coach at St. John’s University, Manhattan College and the University of New Mexico (topic — set plays); Don Harnum of Rider University, Lawrenceville (topic — developing your player); Dave Calloway of Monmouth University (topic — match-up defense); Bobby Gonzalez of Manhattan College (topic — pressure defense); Harry Peretta of Villanova University, Pennsylvania (topic — motion offense); and Derreck Whittenburg of Fordham University, New York (topic — 2-2-1 full-court press). The cost is $45 ($55 at the door), and pre-registration deadline is Oct. 8.
