‘Spoomers’ to visit Walnford gristmill

The Monmouth County Park System will play host to "Spoomers" from around the world this month.

A "Spoomer" is a member of the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills (SPOOM), an organization that seeks to promote interest in old mills and other Americana now quickly passing from the present scene.

This year, from Sept. 18-21, spoomers will tour old mills in New Jersey, including the Monmouth County Park System’s gristmill at Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold.

Other mills on the group’s itinerary are the Red Mill in Clinton, the Obadiah LaTourette Mill in Long Valley, the Cooper Mill in Chester, and the Historic Speedwell in Morristown.

Also included is a tour of Longstreet Farm in Holmdel which, although it doesn’t have a mill, faithfully recreates 1890s agricultural life in Monmouth County.

In addition, the park system will host two workshops on Sept. 18. In "Timber Framing Techniques," participants will construct a small timber frame building that will be used for school programs. "Turbine Restoration" will focus on materials, parts, repairs and restoration methods. Both workshops will take place at Historic Walnford.

The millstone flour mill at Walnford operates on weekends for demonstration through mid-November. Although open daily year-round, Historic Walnford will roll out the red carpet Oct. 5 for Walnford Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

For more information about the Spoom conference or Walnford Day, call (609) 259-6275, or the park system (732) 842-4000.
