The Allentown United U12 soccer team spent a rainy Memorial Day weekend participating in the Burlington Township Soccer Tournament. They competed in the Silver division of the U12 boys’ bracket and came away with the first-place trophy. The United went 3-0 in the tournament and outscored the opposition by a combined score of 9-1. In the first game against the Barrington Fireballs, the United came away with a 2-0 victory. Matt Frein and Haley Wilhelm scored as the United dominated the match and pressured the Barrington’s defense throughout the game. The United played two games on Sunday and in the first game defeated the Mount Laurel Terminators, 6-1, in a lopsided match. Once again the United’s offense was led by Matt Frein who achieved a hat trick. Connor Darrell, Kelsey Glover and Mic Sowa rounded out the scoring for the United. The championship game was played Sunday afternoon against the Hamilton Hawks. The Hawks were a big physical team. The United dominated the match from the start as they used their speed and passing to offset the size differential. The United put forth a total team effort and were determined to come away with the victory. Mic Sowa put in the lone goal of the match to secure the victory for the United. The United’s defense was called upon to step up and lead the team to victory and they answered the call. The defensive charge was led by Danny Santos, Danny Bailey, Bryan Pope and Hayley Odell. They collectively thwarted every offensive counter the Hawks attempted and continually supported the United’s offense as they pressed the attack throughout the match. Time and again the Hawks’ goalie was called upon to make a big save to keep the Hawks in the game. Every United player gave forth maximum effort in an impressive display of team soccer throughout the tournament. The United’s team members are Danny Bailey, Brandon Bush, Kevin Bux, Connor Darrell, Alex Fortsch, Matt Frein, Kelsey Glover, Charlie Nicholls, Hayley Odell, Bryan Pope, Danny Santos, Dean Search, Mic Sowa, Dylan Vaughan, Haley Wilhelm and Chris Wittholt. The United’s head coach is Chuck Darrell and its assistant coaches are Curt Bux, Paul Frein and Garry Wittholt.
