The Allentown United U11 girls’ travel team won its third straight game last week, beating Toms River 2-0.

On a beautiful night, Allentown played under the lights for the first time. United had many opportunities in the first half but the Toms River goalie came up with great saves. United’s defense played well and kept Toms River from reaching the goal. In the second half, United started where they left off, attacking and putting pressure on Toms River’s goalie, who kept coming up with the saves. Toms River then began to put pressure on the United defense. With about 15 minutes left and the score still tied 0-0, the Toms River striker took the ball up the line and crossed it to an open player who shot the ball, but Shannon Buckley dove, making an outstanding save. With 10 minutes left, Carolyn Horner finally put the ball past the Toms River goalie for a 1-0 lead. Angelique Calise, who usually plays defense, came in to the game as a striker and one minute later took a shot from outside the box, putting it in the goal for United’s second score. It was a total team effort for the United Girls.

Charles Kromann, a Millstone Township resident and 2001 graduate of the Ranney School, is currently a sophomore at Skidmore College in Sarasota Springs, N.Y. Kromann led his team to the District One Championships at Williams College’s Taconic Golf Course in Massachusetts on April 26 and 27. Kromann’s winning margin was seven strokes, shooting 68-73, 1-under par for the two-day tournament.
