The Jersey Dreamers, an 18U girls’ softball team, is looking for two players, including a high-quality pitcher, to complete their 2003 roster. The Dreamers plan on attending PONY Nationals and other showcase tournaments. Practices start this month. Lauren Lo, a 10-year-old swimmer for the YMCA of Western Monmouth County Black Team, Freehold Township, broke two team records at the Princeton Fall Festival. Her 36.09 for the 50-yard breaststroke and 1:17:68 for the 100-breaststroke were not only new YMCA marks, but meet records as well. Several other YMCA swimmers had impressive times at the festival. Courtney Smith won the 100 butterfly (1:04.52), Maggie Smith was first in the 100 Individual Medley (1:25.85) with teammate Chelsea Unver, fifth. Ahely Pitner captured the 200 backstroke (2:32.71), and Michael Dietrich touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:32.93).
Howell’s Marnie Bentley and Cristol Wagner are members of The College of New Jersey’s women’s swimming and diving team. Last year, the Lions won the New Jersey Athletic Conference and Metropol-itan championships and were 25th at the nationals. They went 8-2 in dual meets.
The Lions are off to a 4-2 start this year.
Bentley, a junior who graduated from the Peddie School, Hightstown, is swimming the breaststroke and freestyle events for CNJ.
Wagner is a freshman from Freehold Township High School. She competed in the individual medley and butterfly events.
McArdle, a 3-year-old pacing colt who earned $1.3 million in 2002, has been named the New Jersey Standardbred of the Year. This yearly award to a New Jersey-sired standardbred is presented by the Equine Advisory Board of the state Department of Agriculture upon the recommendation of the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey.
Sired by Falcon Seelster, McArdle was bred by Perretti Farms in Cream Ridge and is owned by Norman and Gerald Smiley, Tip Stables and Sampson Street Stables. He is trained by Chris Ryder and was driven mostly by Catello Manzi, Mike Lachance and David Miller.
In 2002, McArdle won 13 of his 23 starts, including the $500,000 SBOA/NJ Classic, the $450,000 Hoosier Cup in Indiana, the $141,250 division of the Oliver Wendell Holmes, the $172,000 Tattersall’s Pace, and the $74,500 Little Brown Jug Preview. He was second at the $1-million Meadowlands Pace. He took a career mark of 1:49.0 in winning the Holmes. He earned $1,349,776.
