Dan Codey has been named general manager of Freehold Raceway by Pennwood Racing, the parent company of the raceway. Codey, who will assume the duties of his position on Monday, succeeds Richard Orbann, who served as the president and general manager of Freehold for the last three years. Orbann will relinquish the daily operations of the track, but will continue as Freehold Raceway’s president.
Codey, a Mt. St. Mary’s College graduate, began his racing career at the Meadowlands, serving in various managerial and racing official capacities during a 15-year stint from 1976-1991. He served as the assistant director of the New Jersey Racing Commission from 1991-95, the general manager of Rosecroft Raceway (Md.) from 1995-96, chief operating officer and general manager of Ocean Downs in Maryland from 1997-2000 and, most recently, the presiding judge at Freehold during the past year.
"I’m pleased to be given a position in harness racing at such a prestigious establishment," Codey said after being introduced by Orbann as the new general manager. "Freehold has many years of history and great tradition behind it.
"I’m looking forward to working with the accomplished and professional staff at Freehold. The track has made great strides forward over the past three of four years, and I embrace the challenge of further improving Freehold’s standing."
Freehold Raceway opens its 92-day summer/fall meeting on Aug. 9.
