Veterans memorial
expanded

MILLSTONE — Two benches will be added to the Millstone Township Veterans Memorial’s original design.

The change to the design was approved last week at the Township Committee meeting. The two 7-foot granite benches will increase the original contract amount by $18,000.

The memorial, which will honor all branches of the armed services, was designed by sculptor Blaise Batko, who designed a similar monument in East Brunswick. It will consist of an entry monument, main monument and five individual branch-of-service monuments. The original design called for two benches, but now there will be four on the site, which is adjacent to the old Clarksburg School on Stagecoach Road.

The memorial is expected to cost around $280,000 to complete. The township has released $130,000 of $150,000 set aside in the capital budget. The Memorial Council plans to seek state Green Acres funds and raise money through private and corporate donations.

The council is also raising funds through a paver’s fund which encourages people to purchase a 4-by-4-inch inscribed granite paver for $300. The pavers will be installed around the memorial in front of the shrubs outlining the walk. Initial installation will be limited to 100 pavers.

Anyone interested in making a donation should send it to the Veterans Memorial Council at the Millstone Municipal Building, P.O. Box 240, Perrineville 08535.
