The Allentown United U11 Travel Soccer team played the Pinelands Jr. Wildcats Saturday at Patriots Park. The match was very important to both teams as they are both still in contention for the division championship. The game was played at a very fast pace right from the outset. The play was even with both teams having opportunities to score, but the teams’ respective defenses thwarted all scoring opportunities. Kevin Bux, Haley Wilhelm and Danny Bailey played outstanding on the back line for Allentown. Alex Fortsch was in the nets and held Pinelands scoreless in the first half. Neither team could score, and the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Both teams came out hard in the second half, and the game went back and forth with numerous scoring chances for both sides. Tough defense prevailed as the game ended in a scoreless tie. Allentown played a well-rounded game with the entire squad giving forth maximum effort. Danny Santos and Matt Frein were all over the field for Allentown. Allentown has one game in hand over both the Lakewood Lazers and Pinelands in their quest for the championship. Allentown has two games left on their schedule, yesterday against the Lakewood Wolfpack and the season finale on Saturday at LMSA.

The Allentown U12 travel soccer team defeated Berkley 5-1 to extend their record to 6-0-2 while maintaining their first-place lead by one point over the Toms River Bulls in the National Division of the Jersey Coast League. The scoring was led by Josh Howell and Jimmy Search with two goals apiece. Another goal was added by William Morris. Assisting in the goals were Josh Howell, Antony Mazzuca and Brandon Smith, each with one assist, and William Morris with two. The defense of Brandon Smith, Matt Wilhelm, Sam Florio and Natalie Howell once again played tough. Superb goaltending by Joey Cook helped seal another victory for the Allentown team. Allentown’s next game will be at home against the Toms River Steamrollers.

The Allentown United U14 (coed) soccer team improved its season mark to 6-1-1 with its last two games: a hard-fought 4-4 tie against the Tom’s River Youth Blasters and a convincing 6-0 win over the Beachwood Invaders. Halfback Thomas Barkley’s late game-tying goal against the Blasters was a must since it kept the United squad in a position to challenge for the top spot in their division. Goals from forwards Brian Pereira (2) and Matt O’Hare set the early tone for the match, only to see the Blasters come roaring back before Barkley’s heroics. United followed up the effort against the Blasters with a home field victory on Saturday against the Invaders. The offense was evenly distributed with Pereira scoring twice followed by single goals from forwards Jennifer Taylor, Nate Cornell, Jonathan Mumpower and halfback Dimitria Papageorge. United now sits alone in second place and must win its final two matches against third place LMSA Hurricane tonight in Jackson and first-place TRY Outlaws (next Thursday night at Shelter Cove in Toms River) to secure the season championship.
