The Allentown United U14 (co-ed) soccer team took its three-match winning streak into Berkeley Township on Friday evening to play under the lights against the Kickers. The match was played short-sided by both teams, but Allentown came out on top again by the score of 8-2. First-ever goals by Zach Strobino and Nick Monticello, both playing forward for the first time, highlighted United’s strong offense. The defense was anchored by fullbacks Nate Cornell and Matt O’Hare with midfield help from center halfback Tian Shackelford. Saturday’s match against the TRY Blasters of Toms River was postponed and will be rescheduled. The 4-1 United squad resumes play Saturday in a home match at Jackson’s Patriots Park against the Pinelands Falcons at 10:30 a.m.
The Allentown United U12 soccer team won 9-0 over the TRSA Blackhawks this past Saturday, led by the scoring touch of Josh Howell and Brandon Smith with two goals apiece. The rest of the offensive punch was supported by Jimmy Search, William Morris, Drew McGovern, Ben O’Hare and Andrew Rauth. The Allentown offense continued to roll with numerous drives set up by the feeds from Matt Sargent and Amber Hoffman. Allentown’s defensive crew of Matt Wilhelm, Brandon Smith, Andrew Rauth, Sam Florio and Natalie Howell was once again stingy on defense, as it only allowed one shot on goal, and allowed only one drive into Allentown’s end of the field. The goaltending was shared by Joe Cook and Saskia Hesselein.Allentown is presently in second place in the Jersey Coast Youth Soccer League, one point out of first. Their next game is against Alliance FC. Sonics on Saturday.
Freehold’s Denise Buckley, a senior at the College of New Jersey, Ewing, was selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 13 when she scored two goals against nationally ranked Rowan University, Glassboro, sparking the undefeated Lions to an important 3-0. CNJ, 14-0 for the season and 8-0 in the NJAC, is the No. 1 ranked team in Division III. This is the second time during her career that Buckley has won the NJAC Offensive Player of the Week award. Buckley leads the Lions in scoring with 23 points on 11 goals and an assist. She ranks third in the NJAC in goals scored and fourth in points per game at 1.64. A graduate of Freehold Borough, Buckley helped the Colonials win the Shore Conference Tournament and Central Jersey Group II state sectional championships.
Jason Faigin, a pitcher in the New York Yankees minor league organization, will be offering pitching instruction for players ages 9-14 at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County starting Nov. 5. Faigin, a Marlboro High School graduate, was a closer for the Greensboro Bats, the Yankees’ Single A affiliate in the South Atlantic League this year. He will share his professional experience with the youngsters as he teaches the mechanics of pitching as well as the conditioning involved. Call (732) 462-0464 for additional information.
