"The African American Experience," a series of programs in observance of Black History Month, will be held at two Monmouth County Library locations during February.

Professor Graham Russell Hodges, author of Slavery and Freedom in the Rural North: African Americans in Monmouth County, New Jersey, 1665-1865, will appear at the eastern branch of the library, 1001 Route 35, Shrewsbury, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 7.

"Caribbean Folklore," a dramatic presentation by Wrickford Dalgetty, Caribbean folklorist, a program for the entire family, will be held at the library headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, at 3 p.m. on Feb. 10.

"Miles of Smiles: Years of Struggle," a documentary about the organization of the first Black trade union, The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, will be shown at the library headquarters, Manalapan, at 7 p.m. Feb. 21. There will be a commentary and discussion after the film.

"Looking Back: The Black Experience in Monmouth County: A Panel Discussion" will take place at the library headquarters, Manalapan, at 7 p.m. Feb. 28. Panelists include Lillie Hendry, educator, guidance counselor and board member, Court Street School, Freehold; Ermon K. Jones, educator and civil rights activist; the Hon. Lawrence Lawson, Monmouth County assignment judge; and Nicy Marion Ham Russell, nurse, social worker and board member, Court Street School.

All programs are free. Documents of births in the 18th and 19th centuries, and manumission (emancipation) records from the Monmouth County archives will be on display at the library headquarters, Manalapan. For more information, call (732) 431-7242.

Chamber music concert to be held in Roosevelt

The Roosevelt Arts Project will present a chamber music concert by the Ellarslie Trio at 8 p.m. Feb. 3 at Roosevelt Borough Hall, Route 571.

The Ellarslie Trio made its debut last November at Ellarslie, the Trenton City Museum in Cadwalader Park. Named after the museum, the trio is made up of Cindy Ogulnick on violin, Erika Phillips on cello, and Alan Mallach, of Roosevelt, on piano. The ensemble will begin its program with the Trio No. 44 in E Major by Haydn, followed by two pieces from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla. After an intermission, the program will conclude with Brahms’ Trio No. 1 in B. Major. opus 8.

Showdeo horse club

seeks new members

The New Jersey Showdeo Association, Jackson, a horse club that promotes barrel racing and other speed games for all levels of experience, is seeking members for its 2001 show season. The season opener will be a "Jackpot" on March 31 at 10 a.m. at Painted Sky Farm, Route 527 and Lawrence Avenue, Cream Ridge.

The family-oriented, nonprofit club encourages good sportsmanship, increased education and fair competition in an enjoyable and supportive environment. The club offers inexperienced riders the chance to learn speed events safely. For those who are already at an advanced level — running barrels at 15 seconds — the club offers chances for competition.

Anyone interested in NJSA is invited to attend club meetings, held at 7:30 p.m. at Tall Oaks Farm, Oak Glen Road, Howell, on the second Wednesday of each month, and are welcome to attend any of the club’s shows. Millstone Recreation

to sponsor ski trip

Millstone Township Recreation will sponsor a ski trip to Camelback Ski Lodge, Tannersville, Pa., on Feb. 10.

The bus will depart from the Millstone Elementary School parking lot at 7 a.m. and return at 7 p.m.

Children age 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult and families are encouraged to attend.

A non-refundable deposit of $15 is required. For more information and a registration form, call the Millstone Recreation office at (609) 208-1823. Ski lift tickets and rental packages will be purchased at the ski lodge.
