Millstone youngster makes commitment to environment

MILLSTONE — Alexandra Stasek, 9, wants to make sure there’s going to be plenty of oxygen around when she grows up.

"We need trees to make sure we have oxygen," the Millstone Township Elemen-tary School third-grader said. "Without trees we wouldn’t have oxygen in the air to breathe."

Instead of just hoping trees get preserved, Alexandra decided to do something about it. That’s why she told her father, Joseph, about a week before Earth Day that she wanted to plant some trees herself at the elementary school.

"Also, if we plant more trees, more animals and birds can live in them," she said. "And the trees can generate more (trees) for years and years."

Joseph Stasek said the idea sounded great to him. So he gathered some neighbors — one of whom, Tony Iadevaia, donated a few trees — and invited them participate.

With the permission of Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Setaro, Stasek brought Alexandra to the elementary school and to the Millstone Township Middle School on April 22 to plant the trees.

"Basically, it was friends and neighbors getting together for Earth Day to do something nice for the community," he said.

Stasek said he and Alexandra wanted to plant the trees at the schools to honor the school district and elementary school principal Victoria Zelenak, who will be leaving the school system for another post after May 12.

"We had a good time," Stasek said. "People came down and we had about eight or nine shovels. It was a lot of fun. We had a pretty good turnout. I’m glad it’s something Alexandra wanted to do."
